It’s March 24 in Fremantle, Western Australia, which marks 32 days since I’ve cut gluten-based food products and *most* dairy from my diet.
Meat is my primary food, along with eggs and fish. Fruit is what kept me from a full carnivore diet and because I’ve had an orange and some baked apples (wrapped in bacon 🤤) recently, purists would say I’m not fully keto. So, let’s call it kinda-keto and be done with it.
Regardless of what term I use, it’s a restriction diet and the results are in: it’s working.
Positive results of a month-long kinda-keto diet:
Bacterial infection* is gone (it took about 2 weeks though)
Big reduction to my chronic cough
Producing way less mucus from lungs and sinuses
Sense of smell and taste has returned
Weight loss - 2.5kgs (5.5lbs)
Bloating is GONE
Sugar and food cravings are gone
WAY more energy*
Increased motivation
I’m eating zero “junk” food
My liver gets a break (I’ve had no booze since Feb 28)
Over-thinking and worrying has diminished
In general, I feel the healthiest I have felt in years
*I am also taking oil of oregano and B vitamin supplements daily
It sounds good, eh? It is, but it’s not perfect (nothing is) so, here are the sucky things:
Unless I eat fatty beef like steak, I’m hungry a lot (like right now!)
I feel guilty if I sway from “keto” (like eating an orange)
A month in, I’m feeling a little deprived (wish I could have 1 piece of chocolate but we all know 1 becomes 2, then 3, then the whole damn block)
Socialising is difficult (this has nothing to do with keto…😂)
Some clothes are now too big (don’t hate me!)
I miss having a drink
I know, the negatives absolutely do not outweigh the positives and I really have nothing to complain about. I’m feeling better, looking better, and getting shit done.
I can actually see myself living this lifestyle longterm if I can add more fruit (like bananas) to it. And booze. I like a drink so I am not giving it up full-time. Maybe someday I will, but I highly doubt it. My dry spells will have to do.
I do recommend trying this for anyone struggling with weight or health issues. Like I’ve said before, I’m not a health professional, but it’s working for me and many others. If you trust doctors, go ahead and ask them about diet changes that may work for you.
Moving forward, I’m adding a Tourist in Your Own Backyard series where I will cover local activities, food & drink, accommodation and destination round-ups.
If anyone would like to do a guest post here on Kai Chronicles about being a tourist in your backyard (with a strong food angle), please do get in touch.
Until next time…
So good to hear all the positive effects 👍
